Creating tests

To create a test, go to a course and click Add in the navigation tree and then Test.

When you click on the above link you see a page with three tabs: Test information, Options and Categories. Click the links below for a further description of the content behind these tabs.

Test information

Field	Description
Title	Enter a title. The title you enter here appears as the heading of the test. It is also the title of the test you see in, for example, the navigation tree in a course.
Introduction	The introduction can, for example, be a description of the test where you explain its objectives, and so on. It is important to note that you do not add questions in the introduction field. You add questions during the next step.
Deadline	Select whether to use a deadline. If you select to use a deadline, you can set the deadline to expire at a specific time, for example, May 10 2010 at 16.00, or set the deadline for a given date. If you do not set a specific expiry time, the deadline expires at midnight on the specified date.
Assessment	From the drop-down list, select whether to use assessment. If you want to use assessment, select a grading scale from the drop-down list.
Mandatory	Select whether the test should be mandatory. Check Yes if the test should be mandatory, and No if the test should not be mandatory.

Options

Field	Description
Scoring method	With penalty: If you select the scoring method with penalty, the participants are penalised with a negative score if they answer incorrectly on a question. The with penalty question type is useful for exams and formal tests. The penalty may prevent the participants from guessing the correct answers. Without penalty: If you select the scoring method without penalty, the participants are not penalised with minus scores. Only the correct answers are rewarded. The without penalty scoring method is useful for training and motivation.
Criteria for completion	If you want the participants to score a certain percentage in order to obtain 'Completed' status in the progress report, check this box and enter a percentage. If you enter, for example, '50%', learners must have a score of 50% or above to obtain a 'Completed' mark.
Display questions in random order	If you check this option, the questions are presented randomly in a different order from participant to participant when they take the test(s).
Question navigation	Forward only: This means that the participants are not allowed to go back to the previous question in a test. Free navigation: This means that the participants can navigate back and forth in a test. When using free navigation, the participants can skip questions and go back and finish them later in the test. Show all questions on one page: When you select this option, all questions are listed on one page. This option is not recommended if a test has many questions.
Number of allowed attempts	Select how many attempts you allow on the test. If you select more than one attempt, select the attempt that will count in What attempt counts (this row appears if you select more than one attempt). You can select from the first attempt, last attempt or best attempt.
Max time allowed for each attempt	Select the time limit for the test. You can select from 'Unlimited' (no time limit) and 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes. Alternatively, you may specify your own time limit by selecting 'Custom'. Enter your own time limit in minutes.
Show result to participant	Decides when to show the results to the participants. You can select from 'When the teacher decides', 'Never', 'After each attempt', and 'After all attempts'. All of the alternatives, except for 'Never', allow you to select whether to reveal the correct answer in the participant result summary.
Use feedback	Here you can select if or when to use feedback. You can select from the following: On questions: Shows feedback after every question. Here you are allowed to define your own feedback messages that appear if: the answer is correct the answer is partially correct the answer is incorrect On alternatives: Shows feedback after every alternative. If this option is selected you must add a feedback message manually to each alternative when you add a question. No feedback: No feedback is shown.

Field	Description
Title	This is the title of the category – for example, 'Easy' or 'Difficult'. You decide for yourself what to call the categories.
Score per question	Assign the point value of each question in this category. Typically, an easy category has few points and the harder the categories are, the more points they are rewarded with.
Question(s) added	The number of questions added to the test from the different categories.
Number of questions to draw	Select how many questions are to be drawn from this category in a test. If you have three categories, called 'Easy', 'Medium', and 'Hard', you can choose to draw 10 questions from the easy category, 30 questions from the medium-difficulty category, and 10 questions from the hard category. Click Add test category to insert a new category to your test.
Score per test category	The total amounts of points in a category. If the category contains five questions and the Score per question is set to 5, this field will show 25.

Editing tests

When you have entered information in the Test information, Options and Category tabs, you can click Save. If you save the test before you have entered all the information, you must go back and edit the test in order to add more information. Edit the test by clicking on the test in the navigation tree and clicking Edit.
