Fill in the blank

Fill in the blank questions test the participants' ability to recollect facts and knowledge they have learned. This question type is useful in language exercises, such as vocabulary tests, but can be used for most text based learning.

To add fill in the blank questions, enter a test and click the Questions tab. Click Add and select Fill in the blank from the drop-down list. 

Introduction text

In the first text box you can write an introductory text. The introduction text explains to the participants what to do in the assignment. You may want to add a suggestion for how to solve the assignment, or an introduction to the text containing the blank fields.

Adding the blank fields text

Go to the second text box and enter the text to which you want to add the blank fields.

Creating the blank fields

When you are ready to create the blank fields, go to step 3, 'Create blank fields'. In the blank fields text in step 2, highlight the word you want to blank out by selecting it or double clicking it with the mouse. Continue by clicking the Create blank button. The word you have blanked out is shown with black highlighting in the blank fields text, and it is also listed in the 'Blanked words' list under 'Create blank fields'.

In the picture above you see the blank fields text and the blanked words. If you want to delete a blanked word, click Remove.

2. Click the Questions tab.
3. Click Add.
4. Click Fill in the blank.
5. Enter an introductory text in the first box. In the introduction you can, for example, tell the participants what to do in the assignment.
6. In text field number two, enter the text to which you want to add the blank fields.
7. To create the blank fields, highlight a word with your mouse pointer and click Create blank. The word you blanked out appears in the blanked words list. Repeat this step until you have blanked out all the words you want.
8. Check the box in front of Check this box if you want the answer to be case sensitive if you want itslearning to distinguish between small and capital letters. Note: If you select this option, for example, the participant will not score any points if the blank field is 'synonym' and he or she has entered 'Synonym'.
9. Check the box Use automatic assessment if you want itslearning to assess the question.
10. Click Save.

Preview
Before you save a question, itslearning allows you to preview it. To preview the question, click Preview. By clicking the preview link, you can see the question from the participants' perspective. Submit an answer to see how the feedback looks for a correct and incorrect answer. Click the Back link to continue editing the question.

4. Make your changes.
5. Click Save.
